So you are getting ready to build your first Solar PhotoVoltaic(Electric) system...
If you are, chances are you have a lot of questions such as:
How many solar cells will I need to make my panelsHow many panels will I need to support my energy needsShould I use a 12 volt or 24 volt configuration and whyHow do I know what size wire to useHow many amps will my charge controller need to handleHow big do my batteries need to be and how many will I need to supply my needsWhat if I have two cloudy days in a row, how can I be sure my system will handle the extended demand
No doubt you have scoured the Internet for clarification on how to do all of this. Sure! There are many sites that show you how to construct a panel, but it is very hard to find ones that show you haw many you will need for your personal system.
The reason for this is simple. Every home requires different power needs. I have had many people ask me,
"How many panels do I need for my _____sq ft home?"
There is no standard answer for that because even if you were comparing two identical homes, you can have drastically different power consumption.
For Example:

Of course the above example is an extreme one. Not many people would leave the lights on in the house 24 hours a day... well, unless you have kids... They seem to love leaving them on all of the time
The point is that with just those few items, you can see how drastic a difference there is based on just the difference in appliances. Then you factor in how often and how long each item will be used for your family and the amount of power needed changes even more.
There is also the painful mathematical problems when you need to convert the various electrical measurements. for example, you need to know how many watts your printer uses. the problem is that it may not specify how many watts it uses. it displays the voltage and amps. now you would need to convert that into Watts in order to see how much power you need to supply it.
Long story short, there is a lot of math involved and figuring out what you need ahead of time will save you money in the long run
If you under size your system and later find out you really needed a much larger system, it will cost you much, much more. (Like having to upgrade from a 12 volt to 24 volt system for example. That would mean new inverters, more batteries, new charge controllers, more solar panels as well as changing the wiring configuration of your panels... UGLY! It hurts just thinking about it!)
Now you can take advantage of the fruits of my labor for a very reasonable price! I have put together a program that does all of the calculations for you!
Here are the steps you take:
Answer the initial setup questionsInput the appliances you will be using (Microwave, lights, etc...)For each item, you will specify how many hours per day you use it, how many days per week, the Watts OR the Amps/Voltage (Just about every electronic appliance specifies one or the other somewhere on the appliance), etc...The program will do all of the converting and calculating for you.It will give you details on the following:How many solar cells you will need to build all of your panelsHow many amps you inverter will need to handleHow thick and how many lineal feet your cables need to be (Based on distances provided in the Initial Setup Questions)How many batteries (based on the AmpHour rating of the batteries you plan to purchase)It also has a materials sheet that will calculate your approximate monetary total for the materials listedThe materials sheet doubles as a checklist and has room for you to add other items not included as part of the calculations such as switches, framing materials, etc...
